Men’s Health Series Part 5: What Happens to Testosterone When Men Lose Weight?

From my desk to you

Feel Better. Look Better. Be Better.

Lucius update after the read!

Can losing weight improve testosterone and sexual function?

Weight loss is often discussed in terms of appearance, but for men, the potential benefits may extend to energy, mobility, sleep, metabolic health, testosterone levels, and sexual function.

Research suggests that weight loss can improve testosterone levels in some men with overweight or obesity. It may also support improvements in sleep and aspects of sexual health. However, weight loss is not a guarantee of improved erectile function or libido, and outcomes vary from patient to patient.

The connection between weight, hormones, sleep, and sexual health is complex. Poor sleep and obstructive sleep apnea may affect energy and hormone regulation. Reduced activity, medication effects, metabolic health, stress, and other medical factors may also contribute to sexual symptoms.

The most effective plan is usually the one that can be followed consistently and protects muscle while reducing excess body fat.

Depending on your health and goals, that may include nutrition, resistance training, sleep support, behavior changes, and medically supervised weight-loss medication.

A recent randomized trial in men with overweight or obesity and moderate to severe sleep apnea found that an interdisciplinary weight-loss and lifestyle intervention increased testosterone and improved a measure related to intimate relationships and sexual activity compared with usual care. The researchers noted that the measure did not directly assess erectile function, libido, or comprehensive male sexual function. The findings are encouraging, but they should not be presented as a guarantee that weight loss will resolve every sexual concern.

I link research articles throughout my educational content because I want you to be able to read the science behind my clinical thought process. My approach is rooted in research and data, while also making space for your symptoms, goals, and personal experience. Good care requires both evidence and listening.

The goal is not simply to weigh less. The goal is to function better, preserve strength, sleep more effectively, and improve the health factors that influence your energy and sexual wellness.

Lucius is about 10 weeks old and weighs over 2.5 pounds. Quite the growth trend from when we found him 7 weeks ago. He weighed less than half a pound that day. He is adorable and will likely believe he is a dog when he is grown.
